North Valley Baptist Church was founded
by Pastor Richard Covington in 1991 and began as a mission of Easthaven
Baptist Church in Kalispell. The church was comprised of three committed
families who all gathered in a small storefront at on Highway 2 East,
here in Columbia Falls, Montana. After almost two years, Covington felt
God’s call to pastor Fellowship Baptist church in Billings. The three
families of North Valley Baptist Church began searching for a new
pastor. Meanwhile, these families, the Radabah’s, the Hascall’s, and the
Grigg’s stepped out in faith and purchased five acres of land at 1750
Talbot Road – the current location of North Valley Baptist Church. Not
long after the property was purchased, the church extended a call to
Pastor Rick Rhubottom to lead them into ministry.
Rick Rhubottom, a native of Southern
California, worked for Charles Swindoll’s ministry “Insight for Living”
while studying theology through Golden Gate Seminaries extension campus
in Southern California. Pastor Rhubottom was also a baker by trade and
worked for Super 1 Foods in Kalispell. This allowed Pastor Rhubottom to
accept the God’s call to North Valley Baptist Church as a bi-vocational
minister.
Following many months of prayer, the
people of NVBC stepped out in faith once again and began the
construction of a 3,900 square foot building known as “the little blue
building.” Thanks to the help of churches in Alabama, Louisiana and
Florida, the building was completed and the people of North Valley had a
building of their own and a vision to reach the people of Columbia
Falls.
Over the course of four years, Pastor
Rhubottom was able to secure some outside support with the help of Rev.
David Causey. The Lord guided Causey to three churches in the South who
chose to partner with NVBC. First Baptist Church on the Square in La
Grange Georgia, Forest Hills Baptist Church in Brentwood Tennessee, and
Avalon Baptist Church in Milton Florida, all committed to sending NVBC
resources, which allowed Pastor Rhubottom to leave his job at the bakery
and work full time at North Valley.
In 2002, North Valley Baptist Church
had reached 80 percent of its maximum capacity and decided once again to
commence a building project to better meet the needs of the people of
Columbia Falls. After many months of prayer, fasting, and meeting
together, God provided an architect who voluntarily drew up the plans
for the current facilities. This is only the beginning of the many
miracles that God worked as North Valley Baptist Church labored for
three years on the building. The people of North Valley Baptist Church
set a faith goal of raising $91,000 and achieved that goal. Meanwhile,
several other churches such as The Church at the Met in Houston Texas,
joined the ranks in supporting North Valley Baptist Church to complete a
new 10,000 square foot building with a beautiful sanctuary. Without the
faithful obedience and sacrifice of many people, North Valley Baptist
Church would not be where it is at today.
